Seahawks Break Into NSCAA Regional Ranking

On the heels of a three-game road winning streak, the UNC Wilmington women’s soccer team has moved into the top 10 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic region rankings. Former UNCW standout and graduate assistant coach Chase Hodges has been named Head Men’s Tennis Coach at CAA rival Georgia State. The Hickory, N.C., native began his playing career at N.C. State before finishing up his last two years at UNCW for former skipper Allen Farfour. Hodges coached at Longwood, UNC Asheville and Drake before moving to GSU. He has led Drake to the NCAA Regionals three of the last four years and owns a career record of 142-44.

Former Seahawk Heading To New Zealand With AIA

Former UNCW men's basketball standout Todd Hendley, now playing professionally overseas, will take a break this summer to play for Athletes In Action during the group's upcoming trip to New Zealand. AIA, a sports division of Campus Crusade for Christ International, will feature a roster of 11 players from 10 different colleges and professional teams. The team is scheduled to play six games and conduct basketball clinics during a barnstorming tour that concludes Aug. 19.

UNC Wilmington womens's soccer signee Stephanie Rose (right) was named Girl's Soccer national Player-of-the-Week by ESPNRISE.com. The product of Jacksonville, N.C., scored two goals and added two assists as White Oak defeated Kings Mountain, 5-0, to win its fourth straight NCHSAA class 3-A crown and record its first perfect season (22-0). The North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association's Player-of-the-Year, Rose tallied 121 points on 50 goals and 21 assists in leading a White Oak squad that averaged more than seven goals a game. She was also named to the All-State Team for the third consecutive season and named NCHSAA Championship MVP for the second straight season. Click here to see the story

Hoops Signee Gamby Makes History

UNC Wilmington women's basketball signee Brittany Gamby (left) was recently featured in an article in ThisWeek Community Newspapers in her hometown of Pickerington, Ohio. The article discueeses Gamby's path to becoming the first student-athlete in Pickerington North High School history to earn 12 varsity letters during her career. Gamby, who also lettered in golf and softball at Pickerington North, joins fellow signess Jessica Freeman and Mya Levels as freshmen on Ann Hancock's squad for the 2009-10 season. UNC Wilmington women’s soccer signee Caitlin Hunter (left) has been named one of five Players-to-Watch for the upcoming girls’ soccer season in Loudoun County by the Washington Post. Hunter, the starting keeper at defending state champion Broad Run, recorded 13 shutouts last season in leading the Spartans to a perfect 24-0 record and the Virginia AA state championship. Hoops Recruit Levels An All-Ohio Performer

UNC Wilmington women’s basketball recruit Mya Levels (right) was named to the Division II Third-Team All-Ohio squad on Tuesday. A native of Diamond, Ohio, Levels averaged a triple-double during her senior season at Southeast with totals of 17.9 points, 12.6 rebounds and 12.0 blocks per contest. Former Seahawk standout pitcher Ronald Hill was selected in the Triple AAA phase of the Rule 5 draft at the annual Baseball Winter Meetings by the Florida Marlins, the same organization that boasts UNCW products John Raynor and Chris Hatcher. Hill recently completed his fourth season with the Philadelphia Phillies organization and posted a record of 3-2 and a 4.02 earned run average in 40 appearances between Double A Reading and Single A Clearwater.

Salinas Named CAA Diver-of-the-Week

The CAA announced on Tuesday that sophomore Kobi Salinas was its Diver-of-the-Week after sweeping the 1 and 3-meter dives last weekend against Duke. Salinas, the reigning conference champion and Diver-of-the-Year, has won 16-of-21 diving events he's competed in. After opening his collegiate career with a pair of losses against Duke last season, he's compiled a staggering mark of 16-3 and won CAA Diver-of-the-Week honors three times!
Salinas also qualified for the NCAA Zone B Regional in the 3-meter after setting a new career-high with 349.73 points.

CAA Invites Fans To Participate In Media Day Chat

Members of the press won't be the only ones with an opportunity to ask questions of the CAA men's and women's basketball coaches during the league's annual Media Day October 22. The CAA will be conducting a live chat with all 24 coaches from the CAA Cyber Court at the ESPN Zone. Fans are encouraged to submit questions in advance by clicking on the button located on the right side of the CAASports.com home page. Questions can also be sent in as the chat is taking place. Each coach will spend about 10 minutes on Media Day answering as many questions as possible, and their answers will be posted on the site.

UNCW men’s basketball coach Benny Moss made his annual visit to “The Morning Disaster with Bryan & Jim” on 103.7 The Bone Thursday morning. And it wasn’t just to talk hoops.
Moss joined hosts Bryan and Jim in the guest chair for NFL Picks, a weekly show that has the trio choosing the winners of this weekend’s games around the National Football League.
Moss and Bryan shamelessly picked their beloved Redskins over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday following last weekend’s debacle against St. Louis at FedEx Field.

UNC Wilmington Director of Athletics Kelly Mehrtens and women’s golf coach Cindy Ho will be taking part in the first-ever Today’s Woman Conference & Expo, held Thursday at the Coastline Conference and Events Center in downtown Wilmington. Mehrtens will serve as a panel member during the day-long event while Ho will be conducting a putting clinic and offering tips and advice as part of the expo featuring products and services geared toward women. The event, sponsored by the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, will explore women's roles as consumers, employees and leaders.

Seahawks In Top 50 Of Women’s Soccer RPI

The UNC Wilmington women’s soccer program finds itself in the top 50 of the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) report of the 2008 season. The Seahawks, who claimed the 50th spot on the list that contains all 318 Division I programs, are one of six Colonial Athletic Association squads to crack the top 100 as they are joined by league members Old Dominion (27), William & Mary (30), James Madison (31), Hofstra (68) and VCU (90). In addition, UNCW faced five teams during the non-conference portion of its 2008 schedule that reside in the top 65: Wake Forest (21), South Carolnia (23), East Carolina (46), Charlotte (59) and Davidson (62).

For the first time this season, the UNCW women’s soccer team finds itself a part of the Soccer Buzz Online Magazine Southeast regional poll, claiming the 15th spot on the weekly listing that is made up of all Division I schools from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. It is the first listing for the Navy, Teal and Gold since Sept. 17 of last season, when they also held the 15th spot before bowing out of the poll to break a streak of 16 consecutive listings. UNCW is 4-3-1 this season and on a three-game winning streak. The Seahawks return to action Friday when they open Colonial Athletic Assocation Play at William & Mary in a 7 p.m. matchup.

Local ABC affiliate, WWAYTV3, will feature the UNCW baseball team in its "Early Risers" segment Friday morning on Good Morning Carolina. Marcy Cuevas, the anchor of Good Morning Carolina, interviewed several players and coaches about their early morning workouts, which includes weight lifting and conditioning activities. UNCW Cross Country Opens Season Friday

The Seahawk cross country program opens its season on Friday hosting the annual Seahawk Invitational. Joining the Seahawks in the collegiate races will be East Carolina, St. Andrew's and Barton. The men's race will start at 6 p.m., followed by the women at 6:30 p.m. There will also be an open division race following the collegiate races. All races will be 5K. Holt Sets Brooklyn Strike Out Record

Brad Holt fanned 12 batters in 5 2/3 innings on Labor Day and raised his league-leading total to 96, setting a Brooklyn Cyclone franchise record previously set in 2002. Wilmington Star News reporter Chuck Carree learned Tuesday that John Raynor, a 9th-round draft pick in 2006 by the Florida Marlins, has been picked to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. The league is the premier destination for minor leaguers as they ready themselves for a shot at the big leagues. Since its first season in 1993, the AFL has seen over 1,500 of its players reach the major leagues. Thirty-six alums were named to the All-Star game this summer. Former Seahawk goalkeeper Brad Knighton and the Portland Timbers of the USL visit the Vancouver Whitecaps Friday for an 11 p.m. EST.soccer match being broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel. The past two weeks have been busy for the two-time All-CAA honoree. Knighton, who is the property of the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, has been on loan to the Timbers, but has been recalled twice following an injury to the Revs starting keeper Matt Reis. On the season, Knighton has made 25 saves and posted a 1.25 goals against average in eight appearances for Portland.

Seahawks Capture Summer Championships

Three Seahawk baseball players made the most of their summer season winning league titles in the Coastal Plain and Northwoods Leagues. Jesse Haney (pictured) helped the Thomasville Hi-Toms of the Coastal Plain League win their third straight league title. Haney posted a 1.61 earned run average and fashioned a 4-1 mark. Also on the team was incoming junior college transfer Ben Thielsen, who finished with a .262 batting average and 21 runs batted in.
Also playing for a championship team was right-hander Seth Frankoff who started the opening game of the playoffs for the Border Cats. Frankoff finished with a 3-1 mark and 2.08 ERA

McNeill Earns Academic Scholarship

UNCW Head Swimming & Diving Coach Dave Allen's season has started off the year in style as sophomore diver Robbie McNeill was awarded awarded funds from Mintzers Mem Scholarship from University of North Carolina Wilmington for the 2008-2009 academic year. The award is presented by the Biology Department to the most promising Biology Major. As a freshman, McNeill helped the Seahawks to their seventh straight Colonial title by winning the consolation dive in the 1-meter and finishing second in the 3-meter.

Volleyball To Hold Navy/Teal Scrimmage Friday

The UNC Wilmington volleyball team will hold a Navy/Teal scrimmage Friday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. in Hanover Hall. The event is free to the public.
Fifth-year head coach Jennifer McCall and the rest of the team will be introduced and participate in an inter-squad scrimmage. The squad will then take part in an informative question-and-answer session regarding the rules of the game. Prizes and giveaways will also be distributed throughout the evening.

PPE Necessary For Tryouts

For any student interested in trying out for an intercollegiate athletic team, he/she must first have a Pre-Participation Examination (PPE) performed by the Student Health Center, receive medical clearance to participate in the tryout, and provide proof of medical insurance.
It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the PPE with the Student Health Center. The Student Health Center will notify the Director of Athletic Training if a student has been cleared to participate in the try-out.
Please understand that clearance to participate in a tryout does not mean that the student automatically becomes a member of an intercollegiate team. It will be the decision of the respective head coach if the individual is selected as a team member.

Brad Holt continued his dominating first season of professional baseball when he fanned eight in seven innings to improve his mark to 4-3 following Brooklyn's 9-1 whipping of the Auburn DoubleDays Thursday night. Holt, who was selected to the NYP All-Star game on Aug. 19, took over the NYP League lead with 69 strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 1.98, second in the league.

The UNCW women’s soccer team continues its preparations for the 2008 season Saturday as it welcomes in-state foe Duke to the UNCW Soccer Stadium for a preseason exhibition. Admission to the game is free. For those unable to attend in person, live stats will be available on UNCWsports.com, weather permitting.

The Seahawks, under the guidance of veteran head coach Paul Cairney, return 19 letterwinners and eight starters from last season’s squad that finished with a 9-8-2 overall mark and a 5-5-1 ledger in CAA play. UNCW finished the 2007 season in fifth place and advanced to the CAA Tournament for the second straight season, where they fell to eventual finalist Virginia Commonwealth in the first round, 3-1.

The Blue Devils, meanwhile, return nine starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA College Cup. The Blue Devils lineup includes 10 players who scored at least one goal last season as well as the core of its defensive corps that posted nine shutouts and allowed just 21 goals.

Duke is coached by Robbie Church, father of former UNCW standout Ashley Church (2004-07). One of Church’s assistants is Carla Overbeck, a former United States National Team member that led the Red, White and Blue to a pair of World Cup titles (1991, 1999) and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1996.

Saturday’s contest is the only preseason exhibition for UNCW. The Seahawks open the regular season Aug. 23 with a home matinee versus South Carolina. Kick off against the Gamecocks is set for 2 p.m.
